Power ranger or naughty nurse?

The sexification of halloween

So All Hallows Eve, also known as Halloween, is just a few weeks away. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because it is the one day of the year that you can cut loose and be something you are not. Be something scary, be something funny, or even be something funky.

But in recent years, I have noticed a trend that is sweeping through the land of costumes and get-ups. The placement of the word sexy before the title of most of the costumes for the ladies, as in Sexy Alice in Wonderland, Sexy Vampire, Sexy Nurse…the list just goes on, and I have a problem with this.

Ladies, I know it might be fun to get a little naughty every once and awhile (heck, I don't have a problem with dress-up at all), but that should be saved for your man or woman, for that special kind of fun and not the entire public to see.

People are always talking about the exploitation of women in the media and women being viewed as objects. But I ask you this: are we not just buying into the exploitation by wearing said costumes? I say yes we are! If you don't want to be treated like a slab of meat, then don't dress like one.

But the sexy trend is spreading past the adult costumes and into the teen market as well. I was wandering around a certain costume shop (which I am not going to name because heck they aren't paying me) looking for costume ideas, when I noticed the teen costumes were starting to tumble into the sexy category, which is just wrong. Do we really want our sisters and daughters walking around in skirts so short they could be belts? Tops so low-cut they could be undershirts? I know I don't.

There is a fine line between sexy and skeazy, and the costumes of today are turning more toward the skeazy side. Now I am not saying that women can't dress up sexy at times, but I do feel that there is a time and place for such things.

My fellow ladies, please try to take Halloween back by not buying into the sexy Halloween costume trend. Sure you can be something cute and romantic, but you don't have to look like a skeaza while doing so. Because of the current trends I am making my own costume this year. I am not saying you have to go as far as that, but please don't buy into the looking like a chunk of meat this year.
